Miami ranked 66th of 262 among “National Universities,” and 26th of 164 among “Public Universities” in the lists compiled by the news magazine. National Universities are defined as colleges which offer a full range of degrees from bachelor’s through doctorate, and conduct research.
Xavier ranked second of 141 in the Midwest master’s level listing, behind Nebraska’s Creighton University. The Catholic liberal arts school has been in the top 10 on this listing for 14 consecutive years, according to a release from Xavier.
The College of Mount St. Joseph ranked 51st on that listing, and Wilmington College was 23rd in the Midwest Baccalaureate Colleges listing.
Case Western Reserve University was the highest-ranking Ohio school in the National Universities listing, at 41, and Ohio State University ranked at 56. In the Liberal Arts Colleges category, Oberlin College was the highest-ranking Ohio school at 20, followed by Kenyon College at 32.
The University of Cincinnati was listed among the “Tier 3” schools in the National Universities listing, but wasn’t ranked.

Miami University will raise its room and board fees by more than 5 percent for the 2009-2010 school year, the university said Monday.
The Oxford-based university’s board of trustees approved the hike, which will raise the rate for a double room and 21-meal-per-week plan to $9,458 from the current $8,998, according to a news release.

In what the company called the first agreement of its kind between Dell Inc.and a major university, the Round Rock, Texas-based computer company said it has signed an exclusive campus-wide computing agreement with the University of Miami.
Dell (Nasdaq: DELL) projected the deal to save the university about $2 million a year.
"By consolidating the technology purchases of each of the university's schools and departments, UM will leverage its purchasing and create a consistent technology platform across campus," Dell said, explaining the university has worked with it to streamline buying Intel-based client and enterprise systems across campus.
About 95 percent of UM outdoor areas and 60 percent of campus buildings are wireless-enabled, Dell said. Nearly 4,000 students have set up free wireless accounts through the school, the company added.
M. Lewis Temares, UM vice president of information technology and dean of the College of Engineering, said supporting more than 15,000 students and 9,400 faculty and staff requires the university to integrate technology as efficiently as possible.
"This agreement enables us to provide the customized products and services we need to serve the university in a proficient manner," he said.
UM has been a Dell customer since 1985, the company said.

The partners have launched the Pharmacovigilance Initiative, a new program that will track trends in side effects and adverse reactions for a wide range of medications, according to a news release.
The initiative will include the analysis of 41,000 diabetics in Humana's membership, including Avandia users. Avandia is the diabetes drug that recently has come under fire because of a reported increase in heart attack risk.
A multi-disciplinary advisory board will be appointed for the initiative. The board will work to determine the scope of the project and communicate research findings to the public.
That communication is expected to begin through public releases and a Web site in early 2008.
