As many as 100 Miami University employees could lose their jobs next year, Miami University President David Hodge told the college’s board of trustees on Dec. 12.

Uncertainty surrounding the school’s investments, its support from the state and 2009-2010 enrollment has forced the university to stall its capital projects, freeze hiring and cut budgets across each of its divisions. The university, with more than 22,000 students, is the second-largest university in the Dayton area, according to Dayton Business Journal research.

Last week, Hodge announced a $22 million budget shortfall and $16 million worth of cuts to its 2010 operating budget. In September, he chose to forgo his annual performance bonus, equal up to $68,000 or 20 percent of his salary, out of respect for Miami’s financial challenges.

Aside from operating challenges, donations to the Oxford college’s “For Love and Honor” campaign have slowed, reported Vice President for University Advancement Jayne Whitehead.

The number of named endowments is the same as a year prior, but the value of the annual fund has dropped $659,000. The campaign has raised $346 million of the $500 million it hopes to collect by the end of 2010.
